Kwiin Ava's Story

How the Conflict Started

Ava (23) has never met Solar (25) or Ether (28). She has never spoken to them in real life. She doesn’t know them.

Kwiin Ava gained popularity very quickly. In 2021 at 19 years old, she posted her hair sculptures online and went viral with several posts reaching 30 to 40 million views EACH. After about 2 years online, Solar found and followed Ava and began recreating the same shapes with her own hair. Stars, hearts, butterflies, and flowers. At first it seemed innocent but it quickly went left. Solar's engagement and followers began to increase by mimicking Ava's designs. Ava noticed but she chose to ignore it and instead reach out to compliment her work. Solar asked her to collaborate. Ava accepted. But according to a now deleted post by Solar, Solar said she did not like that Ava didn't follow her back.

Ava reached out to follow up about the collaboration and asked Solar if she did anything wrong since Solar had "ghosted" her immediately after agreeing. Solar responded and affirmed that Ava did no wrong and apologized for not getting back to her sooner. Ava moved on because she felt the reply was disingenuous.

Solar continued mimicking Ava's designs to the point where it started causing brand confusion. As women, we have discernment, and Ava felt like the uptick in mimicry was because she didn't follow Solar back. Ava had no problem with Solar creating her own hair sculptures, or even sculpting one of Ava's designs every now and again, but Solar was recreating several of Ava's brand identified designs again and again, to the point of the publics confusion between the two of them. Although they were simple designs, these were sculptures that were not seen on the internet, at least not Ava's main brand sculpture, the Star Fro and Star Puffs. Ava popularized the looks with over 300 million views across social media. She is hired for these looks, it became her brand.

Ava made one comment under her own video when someone asked her about Solar "Yes, her whole page is inspired by me." Ava understood this to be true because when they DM'd each other, Solar said she followed Ava since she had her first (now deleted) Tik Tok account that had just under 1 million followers - and most of Solar's designs were replicas of Ava's. So that was Ava's interpretation.

That one line caused a fire storm of chaos. In response to Ava saying Solar was inspired by her, Solar made a defamatory post about Ava that went viral. Her first taste of virality at the time, tied to Ava. This post caused a huge wave of bullying to come Ava's way. She was hit with hundreds of hate messages over lies. Solar accused her of not wanting the share the space, said she had a big ego, and she was "gatekeeping". Ava was hurt and shocked. How did Solar come to this conclusion? Yes, Ava was annoyed that Solar was infringing on her branding, but she never wanted her out of the space. But Ava started to notice something. Solar gets engagement when she's ties herself to Ava. Whether it's mimicking her hair sculptures or making defaming videos about her. Even though Solar had been on social media for quite some time selling jewelry and shea butter and also some hair content, she hadn't seen much rise until she was was tied to Ava...

After Solar's first taste of virality, she utilized the uptick in engagement to introduce hair extensions that mimicked Ava's hair exactly. Ava was floored. These were exact replicas of Ava's hair! A very clear difference from Solar's hair, which is much shorter and more fine than Ava's long, thick hair. These Ava-inspired hair extensions went viral. Again, Solar's rise tied to Ava.

Solar started selling these extensions, then raised money from them. They were a replica of Ava's look. She made not 1, but 4 of Ava's designs. The star, heart, butterfly, and flower. Not only did she replicae Ava's hair, but she used the exact same terminology that Ava used..."Star Puffs". The looks Ava's been hired for, the name she used, the entire vibe she spent time creating and popularizing over several years. Because the 2 were often confused for each other, people thought the extensions were Ava's. This is when Ava decided to send Solar a Cease & Desist.

Solar had no intension of stopping. She didn't cooperate, only offering to take down the 6 month old defamation video. She also threatened that if Ava didn't stop trying to protect her intellectual property, she would make more videos about her. This was perceived as Solar knowing the video would cause a repeat of the wave of bullying Ava's endured with her first video, and she threatened to do it again. All Ava asked was for her to stop incessantly mimicking her and to refund the Kickstarter donations to the people who donated based on Ava's likeness. Solar stopped responding to the negotiations. So Ava moved forward with an intellectual property complaint, as well as a defamation complaint for the video.

What Happened Next

Ava filed the lawsuit and began the DMCA takedown procedures. DMCA notices are platform specific. You utilize them to get your intellectual property removed from other's accounts. This is not an account ban, but a deletion of infringing content from the users account. The notices were on the videos that replicated Ava's look only, not on any of Solar's other videos. When Solar learned of the notices, she began incessantly posting about Ava. In time, Solar's business partner Ether joined in on the defamation. The lies included that Ava was "Anti-us" (meaning anti-black), anti-community, cyberstalking, doxing, legally harassing, covert bullying, and other completely false accusations. She continuously threw out random accusations about Ava until something would stick. She finally found that in the "owning hairstyes" accusation. For 2 months, almost daily, Solar and Ether incessantly posed about Ava, the count is now over 200 times. Ava understood this targeted bullying to be retaliation for protecting her intellectual property. To this day, Ava and Ether have never had any interaction, even though Ether posted that her introduction to the hair sculpting space was "hostile"...a dig toward Ava even though they've had zero interactions.

Eventually one of the posts went viral, and had the same impact as the first video Solar made in October 2024. Over 1000 hate comments came Ava's way, including comments to commit suicide and videos threatening to find and hurt Ava. When Ava made a public announcement about the threats of harm on her X account, Solar posted a cat holding a gun about 90 minutes later on her X account. About 3 days after the threats to find and harm Ava, Solar posted direct links to Ava's address. When one of her followers screenshotted Ava's name and address and posted it along with a photo of a caucasian girl, Solar corrected him and further doxed Ava's identity, telling him Ava was black.

In addition to the above accusations, Solar and Ether decided to make up outlandish claims about Ava wanting to "own hairstyles", "control black hair", and "monopolize the natural hair sculpting niche". This was viewed as manipulating the sensitivity that black people, women especially, have around their hair to gain sympathy. To their audience of almost 800,000 they:

Misrepresented what intellectual property protection actually means
Claimed Ava was “trying to own a hairstyle”
Accused her of motives she does not have
Shared harmful misinformation about Ava, her brand, and her character
Published personal details and created safety concerns for Ava and her family
Attacked the nonprofit Ava and her mother created to help artists learn their rights
Attacked Ava's mother

There seems to be an obsessive-like behavior toward Ava. The desire to mimic her look. The anger behind the lack of a follow back. The entitlement to her art. The overreaction to the inspiration comment. The gun posts and address doxing showing no care for her safety. The incessant need to have her cancelled. It feels like an incredible attempt at a destiny swap.

Ava begun by asking Solar privately to stop using her work. Instead of stopping, she escalated publicly. The situation spun completely away from art, away from truth, and away from anything grounded in reality.

Why This Has Been So Difficult for Ava

Ava is an artist. A young woman. A creator who worked for years on something that came from her heart.

She has never tried to control anyone’s natural hair.

She has never told anyone they couldn’t sculpt their hair.

She has never tried to “own Black hair.”

Her work is about self-love, creativity, and representation, not restriction.

Her intellectual property protection exists for one reason only:
to keep her original character and artwork from being sold and commercialized by people who did not create it. Not to stop people from sculpting their own hair.

That is not gatekeeping.
That is not oppression.
That is standard legal protection for every working artist.

But Solar and Ether misrepresented that online, and their audience reacted harshly.

Ava received waves of harassment, bullying, and frightening messages from people who didn’t know the facts.

The Truth About Ava’s Intentions

Ava has always created for the community, not against it.

Her sculptures are meant to show others that their own hair can become art.
Over the last 2 years, Ava created a character, Avé Avant-Garde, to give children a role model who looks like them, with hair like theirs, doing things with their hair that sparks their imagination...aka hair sculpting. Avé was created specifically to encourage hair sculpting on a grand scale, not to stop it like Solar and Ether are claiming.

Protecting her intellectual property isn’t about excluding anyone.
It’s about ensuring that her original work stays tied to her character, her story, and her mission, not exploited or commercialized by others.

Any suggestion otherwise is simply untrue.

Moving Forward

Ava is moving forward with protecting her intellectual property and will fight to ensure this targeted wave of violent bullying is met with the outcome it deserves.

She will break the fixation on her.

She is choosing clarity over chaos.
Facts over noise.
Truth over narratives.

She will continue creating art.
She will continue building Ave Avant-Garde.
She will continue teaching the next generation to love their natural hair and their imagination.

She refuses to let misinformation overshadow the work she has poured her soul into.

Ava is not defined by this conflict.
She is defined by her art. Her character. Her mission.

And she is moving forward, stronger, clearer, and more determined than ever.
